Your microwave clock doesn't have a clock in it. Not really.

Mains-powered timers — ovens, radio alarms, heating panels — keep time by counting the electricity coming out of the wall. Continental Europe's grid alternates at 50 Hz, so fifty oscillations make one second. No quartz crystal. No internet time server. Just the grid, humming.

Which means the grid has to hum accurately. In early 2018, it didn't.

From mid-January, the average frequency across the continental grid settled at 49.996 Hz — four thousandths of a hertz below target. Undetectable on any given day. But it accumulated, second by shortened second, for seven weeks. By 6 March, ENTSO-E, the body coordinating Europe's transmission operators, reported that mains-steered clocks across 25 countries were running close to six minutes late.

The cause wasn't technical. Kosovo was drawing more power than it generated, Serbia was responsible for balancing the shortfall, and a long-running political dispute meant nobody covered the gap. 113 GWh of electricity simply went missing from the system — and the whole synchronous area slowed fractionally to compensate.

For comparison:

  • The grid spans 25 countries, Portugal to Turkey and Poland to the Netherlands
  • The deviation was 0.004 Hz — about eight thousandths of one percent
  • Britain, Norway and Sweden were spared, having weaker links to the continental grid
  • At 47.5 Hz or 52.5 Hz, every connected device on the continent disconnects automatically

That last number is the one worth sitting with. The grid that lost six minutes was operating well inside its safety margins the entire time. Nothing tripped. No blackout, no brownout, no warning light. The only visible casualty was time itself, ticking slightly slow in a few hundred million kitchens.

Europe's power system now runs an automatic compensation programme that kicks in whenever grid time drifts more than sixty seconds from atomic time. Kosovo has since signed a deal to leave Serbia's grid for Albania's.

Your oven is plugged into a machine the size of a continent, and for seven weeks in 2018 you could read the argument on its display.
