A wind farm looks enormous, but the turbines use almost none of the land

The turbines and roads of a wind farm physically occupy only about 1 to 5 percent of its area. The other 95 to 99 percent stays farmland. And most of the world's turbines sit in just five countries.

Drive past a wind farm and it looks like it has swallowed the whole valley — dozens of turbines marching to the horizon. So it's natural to assume they've paved over an enormous amount of land. They haven't. The turbines and their access roads physically occupy only about 1 to 5 percent of a wind farm's total area. The rest — 95 to 99 percent — carries on exactly as before.

That's because turbines have to be spaced far apart, roughly seven rotor-widths, so they don't steal each other's wind. But the ground between them isn't consumed; it's just… ground. Crops grow and cattle graze right up to the base of the towers. In the United States, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates about 98 percent of the land inside a wind farm remains available for farming. A USDA study found that after turbines went in, less than 1 percent of the surrounding farmland stopped being farmed.

The physicist Amory Lovins put it best: saying that wind turbines "use" the land between them is like saying the lampposts in a car park use up the whole car park.

For comparison, where the world's turbines actually are — because they're strikingly concentrated:

  • China: ~692 GW — more than half the entire planet's wind capacity
  • United States: ~160 GW — a distant second
  • Germany, India, Brazil: the rest of the top five
  • Together, the top five hold about 75% of all the world's turbines, though 138 countries now use wind

The land efficiency is part of why wind scales so well: producing a given amount of power takes far less occupied land than a coal mine or an equivalent solar farm, and unlike a mine, the land underneath keeps earning its keep. Many farmers lease space for turbines and pocket a steady income while still working the same fields.

There's a fair counter-argument about the visual footprint — you can see a turbine from much further than its base occupies — and about spacing on crowded islands. But the idea that wind farms devour farmland doesn't survive contact with the measurements.

The giant on the horizon, it turns out, barely touches the ground it stands on.
